Location

The geography of Fairfield is typical of the great plains of the American Midwest. Surrounded by rolling farmland which produces corn, soybeans, hogs, dairy and other agriculture, Fairfield is a great place to live, work and visit. The county seat of Jefferson County, Fairfield is located 50 miles west of the Mississippi River on Highway 34 in Southeast Iowa. The Highway 163/63/34-34 corridor, a four-lane major highway connects Fairfield to Des Moines on the west and Burlington to the east. Running north-south through Fairfield is Iowa Highway 1, leading north to Iowa City and south to the Missouri state border. Fairfield lies 50 miles southwest of Iowa City, Iowa and 187 miles northwest of St. Louis, Missouri.

Precipitation averages 36.5 inches annually. In the winter (Jan-Mar) the average temperature ranges from 13 to 32 F. When the flowers are blooming in the spring (Apr-June) the average temperature ranges from 40 to 64 F. During our hot and humid summers (July-Sept) the average temperature ranges from 65 to 88 F. When spring (Oct-Dec) arrives it brings cooler temperature ranges from 43 to 66 F.

The public park facilities include fitness trails, Frisbee, golf and nature trails. The County Park is equipped with 25 campsites with electricity and showers. Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts

The Sondheim Center was completed in late 2007 and is America’s only theatre named for Stephen Sondheim. Located in the new Fairfield Art and Convention Center, the Sondheim Center is a 524-seat proscenium theatre with a 40+ person orchestra pit, a 28-line fly system, and state of the art lighting and sound system. Fairfield is truly an artistic community with creative movement that lends itself to an emerging creative class and economy.

1st Fridays Art Walk

In 2002, local resident Stacey Hurlin founded 1st Fridays Art Walk as a way to showcase Fairfield’s artistic talent and over 25 galleries. Hundreds of residents and visitors gather in the town square to tour the galleries and take part in our community’s culturally diverse, creative and artistic monthly celebration. The 1st Fridays Art Walk, a unique cultural celebration which showcases art, live music, dance, theater, film and creative children’s activities, is held twelve months a year on the first Friday of each month. In 2005, 1st Fridays Art Walk was awarded the Iowa Tourism Event of the Year by the Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa.

Annual Events

Come for one of our unique events or festivals that will allow you to experience this great community. Fairfield hosts an annual Eco-Fair in a county which boasts more acres of organic cultivation than anywhere in Iowa. In February, a Film and Video Festival for 3 nights and 2 days featuring world-class film and video is held. We have the world’s largest gathering of vintage Dodge Power Wagons in June at the Annual Vintage Power Wagon Rally. From June to September, check out the Live on The Square Summer Concert Series. The Gingerbread House Extravaganza, which runs from November through January, features spectacular gingerbread creations by professional artist, bakeries, school kids and service clubs and organizations. In December, come to the Holiday Lighting Celebration to see why we’re called Iowa’s Christmas City.
