Community Resources

In Fairfield, we have many unique attractions and diverse activities.Fairfield was named an Iowa Great Place by the State of Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Since 1971, Fairfield has been home to Maharishi University of Management, founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. We’re also home of the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts, one of only two theatres in the world bearing the composer’s name. Also, hundreds of residents and visitors gather in the town square each month for 1st Fridays Art Walk, touring our art galleries and taking part in our community’s culturally diverse, creative and artistic monthly celebration.

The City, local organizations, and residents have invested in our community by:

  • Building a new public library
  • Spending $7M to develop a new downtown civic and convention center with the Steven Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts
  • Developing a strategic Go Green Plan
  • Beautifying the downtown streetscape
  • Installing 100mb Internet fiber network for residents, businesses and other community organizations

All of these improvements and cultural opportunities have increased sales and investments for our community’s businesses, cultural and entertainment venues

Fairfield is a diverse community that features a commitment to the arts and culture, sustainable living, and an entrepreneurial spirit uniquely found amongst the corn fields of southeastern Iowa. We've improved our entrepreneurial ecosystem, public/private partnerships and infrastructure projects which has lead to economic expansion and diversification, historic preservation, and tourism. The residents of Fairfield have helped Fairfield to continuously reinvent itself into a creative and diverse community with over 40 art galleries, live music, live theatre and international cuisine. Our sidewalk cafés and ethnic cuisine truly give Fairfield an international feel.

Whether joining us for a day, a weekend, a week, or to live, enjoy our world-class arts, theatre, music and shopping on our historic town square. Come for one of our unique events, festivals, restaurants or just to relax. We specialize in family fun, cultural and creative diversity, and recreational abundance.
